Genealogy Blog Finder
Genealogy Blog Finder
Starting at the top with the search box for blogs...most of my ancestors come from Indiana (try any of the states) and find that my blog is on this list down at the 6th spot ~now with the same state, check the box
Blog Posts and come up with something different
Now do it with any of your surnames from your family tree. I am using the main name of SARGENT for finding the blogs ~which will come up with mine being listed 1rst. The "posts" wil come up different

There are over 1,800 genealogy and family-history blogs at the GeneaBloggers site.
As well as the ONE NAMED site every genealogist knows and uses~ Cyndi

GEM: Rethinking the Journal
10 journal topics for you to write about.
This would be a journal that you keep in your desk where you do your research, and can just pull out now and then and jot down your answers to these questions:
1. Why does doing genealogy matter to you? It is history about my family I never knew...and would like to know much more about.
2. Why do you think it will be important for generations to come? I believe everyone has a past, good or bad, learning how we came to be where, what, how and why from those before us is fasinating
3. What are your dreams? To have the "Paper" trail, documents of my blood line to prove the family line.
4. What is your hope for your future generations? that they won't wait so long to get involved with their own history.
5. What do you want your descendants to really know about you? That family really does matter.
6. What’s your average day like? most days, due to 3rd shift job, sleep mostly, but get in some genealogy work in the mornings, and really heavy on the days off.
7. What are the changes you’ve seen over the years? Alot, mostly the computer age...cell phones, I can remember the time of the mail...not email, coin phone booths, and making meals in the oven/stove with NO MICRO Wave!
8. What do you wish you had known at age 20? HA HA HA...that was over half my life ago...have to answer EVERYTHING!!!
9. What are Your predications for the future? The Rapture is just around the corner
10.“I remember when” entries phone booths, manual typewriters, home made bread (pies, cakes, cookies), fresh air, playing out side, etc.
These were all just off my head, what came to mind...thanks Lisa for the ideas...ds

Genealogy Tip of the Day: Write it or Type it
Genealogy Tip of the Day: Write it or Type it: "You won't remember that fact, where you found it, where you put it, or who is in that picture. Write it down, type in your genealogical data..."
Same should go for making lists...just remember to title and date them. I do this with the connections I find on Ancestry.com where the person's email is shown in their contact info. Keeping who is with which relative can be pretty trying sometimes

WHAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK?

#1~ Join a Genealogical Society
(Still have to do this one myself)
#2Check out the local public / university Libraries.
(The local Library is where I got started. Go to the Genealogy section , just look around , up and down the rows of books. Check out the computer stations~which most will have a FREE hook up to ANCESTRY.COM )
#3 Check out the LDS Family History Libraries.
(find on close by from the FAMILY.ORG site.
#4 CYNDISLIST is one of the best sites out there for resourses and links of all kinds. I do believe that almost EVER person out there doing genealogy has used this site as a starting point and still with her today!
Most of the online reasearch is free, so you can get pretty deep into your family roots and not spending a penny !
NOT TIME CONSUMING!
#1 the time factor~WHY? Start with one person and go from there. I started with my dad at the time of his death back in Dec. 2005. and have gone back about 12 generations just the SARGENT pedigree.
#2 Don't bite off more than you can chew~take small bite size portions. Everyone starts with the "spoon size" method. Just take is slow. As you grow and hunger more , the wanting will come around.

Taxes were collected the first time starting January 1937, about two years later.
So you would have to figure that only adults working were the ones with SS#. But when a child is born today, they also recieve a Social Security Number. Check the FAQ's

WHO gets a birth certificate? Any child who is born alive.
WHAT is a birth certicate? A birth certificate will tell you the date and place of birth of a named child. It will also give you the names of the parents and the parental residence, possibly. And the father's occupation. So the birth certificate will give you two generations for the price of one. And it will give you the mother's maiden name, or her former name, so that you can then look for their marriage certificate. And a sequence of these birth, marriage, birth, marriage certificates will take the family tree back in time and will provide proof of relationship.

WHY do you need a birth certicate? The birth certificate can be used to authenticate one's identity and nationality, and assist swith obtaining government-issued identity documents such as a passport or driver's license
How to get a birth certificate .
Step 1
Get birth certificate copies from the United States government's Vital Records Offices. Vital Records Offices handle all certificates of birth, death and marriage. To obtain a certificate you must contact the Vital Records Offices in the state where you were born.
Step 2
Find a directory of Vital Records Offices on the National Center for Health Statistics, Center for Disease Control website. This can assist you in locating the agency in each state.
Step 3
Access to birth records is limited. To request a birth certificate you must be the person whose name is listed on the birth certificate, the parent or legal guardian, grandparent, an adult child or sibling, or the spouse of the person named on the birth certificate. If you are not on this list, don't bother applying.
Step 4
Provide the following information to conduct a search: the full name of the person on the birth certificate, the date and place of their birth, their current age, sex and race, their mother's and father's full name, your relationship to the person, and the number of certificates requested.
Step 5
Decide which way to apply for the birth certificate copy. Each state has slightly different application procedures but most allow you to apply in person, by mail or by fax. A few states do allow you to pre-order by phone, but you must pick up the birth certificate in person. The requester must provide a signed request form and valid photo identification . Valid identification can be a state-issued identification card, employer-issued photo identification or a driver's license
NOTE: since 9/11 more restrictions have been placed on getting documents , so just be patient and try to work with the agencies the best you can.
